Educated: A Memoir
by Tara Westover
Heavy — but compelling — reading alert: Educated is the painfully true story of American author Tara Westover, who was born with no birth certificate to survivalist parents who raised her and her siblings off the grid in Idaho. She extricated herself from her family’s strong anti-establishment mindset — a world created and controlled by her abusive father and enabled by her mother — only when she stepped inside a classroom for the fist time at age 17.
With that first taste of formal education, Ms. Westover, whose parents abhorred public education, doctors and all things related to the government, pursued learning for a decade. She graduated magna cum laude from Brigham Young University; earned a master’s degree from Trinity College, Cambridge; was a visiting scholar at Harvard University; and received a Ph.D. in history from Cambridge in 2014.
“Educated is about abuse, and the way in which both abusers and their enablers distort reality for the victims,” wrote Drew Mecham, a former boyfriend of Ms. Westover’s who is mentioned in the book. “It’s about the importance of gaining your own understanding of the world so you’re not dependent on the narratives imposed on you by others.”
