The Moment of Lift: How Empowering Women Changes the World
by Melinda Gates
Former Microsoft engineer Melinda Gates is company co-founder Bill’s wife, and in most of the world, they need no introduction. For more than 20 years, she has traveled the globe as co-chair of the foundation bearing her and her husband’s names, determining direction and priorities for what has become the world’s largest philanthropy. She is also a founder of Pivotal Ventures, the investment incubation company through which she announced in October a $1 billion commitment over the next decade to “expand women’s power and influence in the United States.” Pivotal Ventures will focus its efforts in these three ways, she explained in a guest column published by Time.
“… Dismantling the barriers to women’s professional advancement.”
“… Fast-tracking women in sectors with outsized impact on our society—like technology, media, and public office.”
“…Mobilizing shareholders, consumers, and employees to amplify external pressure on companies and organizations in need of reform.”
For greater insight into Melinda Gates’ focus and motivation and her beliefs about how the world would benefit from greater gender equality, consider reading her recently released book, The Moment of Lift: How Empowering Women Changes the World. This bestseller is an engaging and candid look at some of the huge obstacles to women reaching their full potential, such as lacking maternal and newborn health, access to family planning and schools and discrimination in the workplace.
“We are right to be outraged. But we’re also right to be optimistic,” Melinda Gates wrote. “Americans are no longer willing to accept the glacial pace of change — and I feel lucky to be alive at a time when we no longer have to.”
